"quick comparison with Grace IR1000" 2009-05-04
By JB in Oregon (Lincoln City, OR USA)
In comparison to the Grace IR1000 (the first generation Grace internet radio I believe):

Range is poor...fine I suppose if you are using in the same room as your wifi access point

Sound quality went downhill considerably...smaller speaker in a smaller box

Quite small

Uses V-Tuner not Reciva portal

Could not get it to connect to my wifi range extender which works fine for several laptops and my Grace IR1000

I just can't recommend this one (though there is something to be said for the battery backup which maintains the connection while moving it about the house).

 "DisGrace GDI-IRP600" 2009-04-22
By B. Pollock (Hermosa Beach, CA)
If you've been waiting a long time for a portable WiFi Internet radio, wait a while longer and don't be tempted by this one. This is a pitiful product from an irresponsible company. It doesn't connect to my Apple AirPort Extreme network, which may have something to do with Apple's latest firmware v.7.4.1, although my Roku Internet radio and other equipment continue to work just fine with my AirPort network. The DisGrace initially functioned with the AirPort network but was prone to constant re-buffering, especially when receiving streams with high bit rates. For portable Internet radio, I've gone back to cellular, using a Verizon Palm Treo 700p with Altec Lansing inMotion portable speakers. I have another router, a Kyocera KR2 EVDO WiFi unit, and the DisGrace still works with that, though with the same dropouts and rebuffering. Expect to have to put the radio directly next to the router since that's about the limit of its range. I recently discussed the problems with the manufacturer, which had ignored my initial E-mail. They authorized a repair or exchange. I sent the radio in and got the same radio back, with no improvement in performance and no explanation as to the nature of the service they provided. The fact that they added settings for a different WiFi network and left their Costco batteries inside suggests that they did try to get it working but they didn't feel the need to comment on their experience. Just send the piece of trash back to the customer and move on. That's the spirit! I'm very happy with Amazon but completely disgusted with this product. If your Internet radio doesn't have to be portable, go with a Roku SoundBridge. That's a class act.

 "Battery powered internet radio" 2009-04-21
By Gregory Fadul (San diego,ca)
This is a nice little radio if you need:

- Over 10,000 internet radio stations

- Also includes FM reciever

- AC or Battery powered

- remote control

The key feature of this radio is the fact that it can work on batteries for over 14 hours. If you do not need that feature I would suggest either the GDI-IR1000 or GDI-IR2000. All 3 products sound very nice but the GDI-IR1000 and GDI-IR2000 have a larger speaker and hence more bass performance and volume output.

The GDI-IR1000 and GDI-IR2000 are basically the same. The only difference is the GDI-IR2000 adds aux in jack and remote control to the GDI-IR1000 feature set.

Also please note that the GDI-1000 and GDI-IR2000 both can play Pandora and Sirius ( if you have Sirius premium internet radio service). The GDI-p600 does not support those additional services.

The GDI-IRP600 has been tested and verified to work with hundreeds of routers. However, please note it does not currently work with the Apple extreme wireless router.

This would be a nice radio, but it is not working for me. After setting up the connection to my wireless router, it displays 'Connecting' for a while and then shows: 'Server is not available'. Tech support is not answering my emails. The only thing that works right now is the FM radio. I may have to return this product.

 "Logitech Remote controller" 2009-06-17
By Brendan T. Smith
I have had this product for about a month. I had the original squeezebox and wanted to add this controller (it came out one month after I had purchased the original squeezebox). It took me less than 10 minutes to set up and has worked extemely well for the first month. Occasionally, it will drop the signal when I have put it down for a while, but it takes less than 30 seconds for it to find the system again. I am very happy with the product and would recommend it to others. I use it with a range of up to 100 feet from the wireless router.

By Ian S. Mccarthy (Myersville, MD United States)
If you look at the reviews for the Duet (this controller plus the receiver) you will see that there are many problems with the controller. I have both the Duet and the original squeezebox and I would recommend buying the original rather than the Duet. The Controller has a very limited range and drops out of contact with the network without warning. Re-establishing contact is a frustrating process that works some days and on others simply fails repeatedly. If you contact support online you will probably not receive any answer and if you call they will blame your wireless connection. Having said this, when it works it is marvellous.

 "good product, bad service" 2009-09-28
By John Plummer (Taos, NM)
I purchasd the AR Internet Radio (Model ARIR200), arriving about a week ago. I now have it hooked up and operating, and I am well satisfied with the result.

However, it was not easy getting there.

The quick setup instructions tell me that I must first register the product. I go to the computer and log on to the address provided. I fill out a five page form, then try to submit. I must first enter the script shown below. There is nothing shown. I try to submit with a blank entry. The web site is not available.

My problems are just beginning. I call the service number provided in the instructions. I am connected to Audiovox, a service company. It is quickly apparent that they know little about the product. The first girl compensates for that lack with a sassy attitude. It is my firewall. Disable the firewall and all will be well. It isn't.

In fact it was the fourth call before someone answered who knew the source of the problem. The AR server was down, and had been for at least a week. I could of course return the radio.

I don't want to return the radio!

A separate sever was found, this one through RCA, and I only had to fib a little bit to get my radio registered.

I now found that there were several services provided in which I have no interest. One, that provides on-line storage for my own MP3's, hangs the radio up until either a) it is unplugged, or b) the MP3 site is separately registered. A ditty by Marlene Dietrich is now stored on-line, for all I know for eternity.

That accomplished, I now go to sleep to BBC World Service, or classical music, or jazz, without sharing my cot with my laptop. Hooray!

 "It's a software problem." 2009-05-25
By D. Husby (Aloha, OR USA)
Back in 2001 there were several MP3 players on the market. They were all pretty mediocre and did pretty much the same thing. And then Apple came along and changed the entire industry. Why? It wasn't because of superior hardware or some revolutionary new technology unavailable to their competitors. It was because of their superior software and insight into what makes a good user interface and a good consumer experience.

This is what the ARIR200 lacks. It's got 22 buttons, an LCD display, a control wheel, a 512K audio buffer, Wifi, USB, AM/FM tuner, and ethernet port. The only thing lacking is the vision for how to turn this pile of stuff into a really good product.

The user interface is workable, but amature. Most of the 22 buttons are useless. The 512K buffer is also pretty much useless, but with good software, it could be made into a Tivo-like feature for pausing and re-winding live media.

Acoustic research would benefit greatly from releasing their software sources to the open source community and letting them polish up the ARIR200 into a truly good product.

 "Poor reception." 2009-04-13
By Snarly (USA)
I bought this as an "inexpensive" (LOL) internet radio for talk stations, fully accepting that the sound quality would not be that great. But this radio will not pick up my wifi router 4 feet away on the other side of an interior wall with the electrical wiring in the wall between them. Relocating it to a cleaner radio pathway, it still drops the signal frequently, and must be manually reset. I can't recommend this radio because even a $10 radio that doesn't work very well is an exorbitantly over-priced radio.

 "FANTASTIC product!" 2009-08-28
By Christian (Santa Barbara, CA)
I can't say enought great things about this baby!

The sound is fantastic.

The price is very very good for what you get.

The system works like a charm.

Details:

I bought a Logitech Squeezebox Boom and it was nice but not great. Sounded like a (decent) boom box... hence the name I guess!

I already have a great sounding Klisph iFi system for my computer and adding just this receiver (w/o paying big bucks for a remote)

worked like a charm (as someone else posted).

My setup:

Good computer speakers/amplifier (Klisph iFi)

squeezecenter software running on a linux box

squeezebox receiver (this product)

ipod touch (used, just over a [...] bucks) running "ipeng" software gives you an even better user interface than the squeezebox duet.

I also control my receiver through the squeezecenter's web interface on my computer.

Warning:

If you have a linux system and you know the basics of home networking (what is an ip address, a gateway address, a netmask your primary DNS address etc)

than it's pretty easy to setup (the instructions are ok and there is an associated discussion forum where you can as for help if needed).

Note that a friend with a linux laptop can come and help you set it up. It's only a one time deal to setup the box. After that you don't need

linux to run it.

If you are windows only user and don't know any linux user, then if you're very technically inclined you could install perl (activestate)

on your machine and setup the software. But it seems like it would be a pain in the butt to setup that way. You may just have to pay the

premium of getting the squeezebox duet (OR borrowing the remote from a friend who has one!).

I found the instructions and links to the software to setup this box at:

Good luck and enjoy a fantastic product!

"If you are into music, this is necessary" 2009-03-03
By Jose J. Gonzales (NJ USA)
I didn't purchase this from Amazon, although it is the lowest price around, instead i was able to purchase mine from Circuit City at an insane price due to liquidation.

At first installation was tricky, but i mostly blame this on a bogged down 9 year PC I was using. My laptop had crashed a week prior to purchasing the Duet. i figured I would at least get a "taste" of the Duet's features while i waited for my laptop's recovery disks to arrive.

With squeezecenter(program needed to stream throuhout house) installed on my PC i was able to get internet radio and Rhaposody to steam. But i was having problems streaming my Itunes library. At the end of the day i really blame this on my old bogged down PC.

Into the picture comes my newly formatted laptop. I installed the squeezecenter on there. At first I was still having the streaming problem with Itunes. I was able to find the FULL manual on the slimdevices(Logitech) website. After reading through it a quick change in my settings and resestting my Duet painlessly solved my problem. Within seconds i was streaming my 3,000+ itunes music.

My only real gripe with the Duet was it not including the FULL manual, but instead a Quick Setup Guide. I now enjoy listening to music more than ever and plan on converting all my music to FLAC and eventually purchasing a DAC to really get the most out of this unique system. But don't get me wrong the squeezebox sounds pretty good as it stands right now

 "Poorly designed" 2009-07-30
By TR (California)
Returned for the following reasons:

Instruction book almost impossible to read due to small print.

Took over 4 hours to get radio to connect with Internet due to poor instructions in book errors.

Radio is NOT user friendly at all.

Very difficult to change from one station to another.

Buttons on front of radio do not reflect what their function really does.

Radio is loaded with stations that can not be easily removed which requires user to spend lots of time just to change stations.

I do NOT recommend buying any products from Kaito Electronics, Inc..

I have been in the electronic field for over 30 years and built TV's, Radio's, Computers and can fix most every kind of electronic equipment there is. I feel this item is just poorly designed.

 "So far so good." 2009-06-30
By L. XIAO (Cerritos, CA, USA)
I have been using this radio for 3 months, I really like it, for numerous reasons:

1. Easy to operate, which matters the most to me, the interface is very friendly, but you have to be somewhat tech savvy though. The main control knob runs smoothly. It also comes with a remote control, which turned out to very handy sometimes.

2. Large selection of radio stations, you can access those stations by going to different folders such as "my favorite", "most popular" and such, if you don't find a station you are looking for, you can browse it by different regions and categories. But for me, the most efficient way is program it using a computer, just type the radio's IP address into your web browser on your computer, then you can add stations to your "my favorite folder" by copying the URLs of the stations to that folder, this works well especially for some less well-known stations.

3. Sound quality is decent, it does have a jack for an external speaker so you can get stereo sound out of it, have not tried it yet.

IMHO, the only thing to improve is make it battery operated.

 "KAITO IR-168 just OK !" 2009-04-14
By W. Horan
This is the 3rd wifi radio that I have bought and find that it does not measure up. It is more awkward to use (none that I have seen are as easy as a plain old AM/FM tabletop) and slow(er) to capture a signal whether on cable or WIFI. Also, the station reference website, iradio168.com, doesn't seem to be on top of new subscription requests. It has been four days since I applied and as a result I have not been able to acquire access to a few of my favorite Talk/News AM sites. Sound quality is poorer than a set that sells for less (i.e. Kaito IR-168 Wi-Fi Internet RadioILUV-INT170). I am returning the radio for an alternative (not yet chosen). I give it 2 stars.

 "Wow!" 2009-10-13
By DennyInDurham (North Carolina)
Caveat: I purchased this (and a couple of Grace radios before) primarily to listen to a handful of Sirius talk channels without turning on a stereo system. DirecTV provides all the XM music channels, and I have a minimum of use for the 15,000 internet stations the radios successfully receive.

After suffering through a couple of months trying to get Grace Internet Radios to work reliably with Sirius Internet Radio streams (they're otherwise decent products), I happened on the Logitech Squeezebox Boom (in a CNET Grace Radio review).

Sirius works. Effortlessly. Just like you'd expect it to. But it starts playing faster than a Sirius Satellite Radio (and much faster than a Grace radio, when it works).

Everything else works, too, and is highly customizable to do things the way YOU want to.

Notable, and helping to justify the relatively high price, is remarkable sound quality for such a small unit, good build quality, usable IR remote, remote control from a PC, both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections, and ability to be used in conjunction with other Squeezebox products.

This is simply an outstanding product.

"My all-in-one bedroom radio, alarm clock, streaming internet radio" 2009-10-13

I have one of these in my bedroom. It's pretty much my all in one alarm clock, streaming music player, streaming internet radio, and clock. I believe you can set up to four alarms. I generally have three alarms set and you can also choose to set some alarms for daily and other alarms for Monday through Friday or even even select days.

The sound quality is reasonably good considering this is an all in one unit, but don't expect the sound to be anything like your home stereo.

I also have this set up to play music stored on my computer. You can also select for this to play from [...]. It will store the same stations that you have stored on your Internet account. It will also play your local stations, but only through wi-fi (using your router) if they are broadcasting over the Internet.

I also like this a lot because the digital display is not hard to focus on. It's just bright enough to read, but not so bright that is interferes with sleep. With my last alarm clock radio I had to put a shirt over the display because it was very distracting.

The remote also has a magnetic surface on the top of the radio that it attaches to so it doesn't get lost. I've had to replace the remote battery a couple of times. It takes a CR 2032.

Overall, if you have some money to spend on a bedroom music player, this is my top recommendation.

"Wondering which reviews are correct? Here's my experience!" 2009-10-03
By New Reviewer (NJ)
If you're reading many reviews of the Logitech Squeezebox Boom WiFi Internet Radio, wondering if you should drop $275.00 on it, could this possibly be as good as the many glowing reviews make is sound? And what about those negative reviews?

My experience? Just got it on 10/1/09. As I opened the box, I was at home on a one hour lunch break. I figured I'd be "starting the process" ...and get back to it later since I'd run out of time, figuring there would be some kind of glitch in the setup. NOPE!

It was amazingly easy. Turned it on, the screen guides you through it EASILY. (I didn't even open up the manual!) The radio was connected to my wireless network in my house in under 5 minutes, and that's probably because I wasn't rushing, didn't want to do something wrong. It was an easy step-by-step, click-this, move on, click-this etc. I don't have a password with my wireless net, maybe that made it very quick.

After it found the wireless net, I went to go play some music - again, without opening the manual. Just using the screen and making choices based on what was on it, I was playing stations from around the country a few minutes later. UNDER 10 minutes - tops - to be up and playing music! NO hassle doing this.

I have had Rhapsody for a few years, and it's one of the reasons I bought this radio - so I can hear all that music with great sound, not on my tinny laptop speakers. NO PROBLEM getting my Rhapsody account up and going on this radio. Typed in my Rhapsody username/passwork - connected to it right away and accessed everything EASILY.

If you're afraid of getting this radio because you won't be able to figure it out to set it up, (which was a worry I had going into this) cross that worry off your list. The EASE OF USE with this radio is AMAZING. They really made this super user-friendly.

I consider my self slightly up-average on the technology end of things, only in that I have used computers at work for years (NOT an I.T. guy, can't fix a computer, just use them), so can do the "normal" things you need to do with computers. So I don't think my ease of use with this was due to being some advance computer guy. Hardly.

The sound? BELIEVE the reviews about how AMAZING the sound is. GREAT bass as people have said in reviews, but the overall sound is, to me, incredible.

I had put off buying this...had it on my Wish List for a YEAR - boy I wish I had just gone for it back then! DO NOT WAIT, you will love this radio. I know it's only been a few days, but at this moment I intend to use whatever "Christmas Cash" I get this year, and get a SECOND one - for the 2nd floor of my house. I am sure I will be doing this, I love it that much.

For a HUGE music-lover like me, this is perfect, even though it's not cheap. Music means that much to me. Great sound, being able to access my Rhapsody account and so many other music sources (I really like CMT Radio and VH1 Radio for example) - I don't know if it gets any better than this!

 "Fantastic, just plain cool" 2009-10-03

Prior to my recent research into these things, I had no idea internet music streaming was available or so simple. If you've managed Wifi in your home, you can set this unit up. The sound is great (it is presently our only audio device in a 1300 sq. foot home). We don't receive radio signals where we are, but we've got iTunes and we have favorite radio stations from another state;and now we've got the music we love available throughout the house. Easy to use, and fun to operate remotely from the laptop. I look forward to a "real" music system someday, with a Squeezebox Boom in the smaller rooms. It's a terrific system.

"Fun device, glad I bought it" 2009-10-02

I wanted a radio and alarm clock for my bedroom. This was pricey, but I love it. The last software update fixed a few of quirky issues I had. The internet radio stations play and sound great and just have unlimited content. I don't get some of the sports broadcasts due to blackouts, so not quite like live radio. I do with it could play my content off my media server, without needing to running Squeezebox server on one of my machines. But the way it is designed, I am sure they can add a plug in to resolve this. It is designed so that it can be extended.

The alarm clock is great. It does not lose settings during power outage. Can have multiple alarms set for specific days with custom alarm sound. No more forgetting to set the alarm and it does not come on over the weekends. Great design Logitech!
