Use as a shop radio and turn it on with the light so didn't want a digital that had to be reset every time the power is disconnected. Sound and reception are fine although I usually only have it tuned to local public radio station which is pretty strong. Can't beat it for the price.

I unpacked, plugged the battery, turned it on and dialed my favorite AM channel. I live about 15-20 miles from the AM channel antenna. Works great. Sound is great. I mean, it ain't my Bose. Portable and small so I parked it in the corner of my bathroom or use it outside when I am working in the yard.

As an avid pocket radio listener, I bought one of these Sonys a few years ago and it lasted about a year before it developed serious issues with the volume control. Crackling noises, the sound cutting in and out, not being able to get it to play on a low volume setting.....ie, it was either blaringingly loud (usually with crackling noises and sudden volume bursts etc..) or nothing at all. So over the last few years, I've bought other pocket radios searching for a great radio that would last a few years. Sadly, I've had little luck finding such a radio, despite having bought some "good ones" at Radio Sh%^ for a LOT more than this one, and some "cheapies" here and there. So, getting very frustrated and while doing research here on Amazon, I came across this one again, and with all of the great reviews, I thought I'd give it another chance. "Maybe I dropped the last one a time or two too many", I figured. "And for $10, if I get another year out of it, it would have been worth it." Well, it lasted less than ONE MONTH this time. It was great UNTIL suddenly the speaker didn't work anymore. I'm not sure why, but it "broke" shortly after I used it with an earpiece plug-in. I used my Nokia (phone) hands-free headset with an adaptor to fit the standard jack in this Sony pocket radio...and it worked fine for the first day or two. Then, all of the sudden, there was no sound coming from the external speaker. I don't know how or why this happened, but something is now amiss. It would seem that the jack has been "damaged" by the headset plug / adaptor and somehow, this renders this speaker dead. But why, and how? There was, as far as I know, no reason that this happened. And with the external speaker not working, this radio is nearly useless to me now and I am sending it back to Amazon. So, two of these for me, and both unsatisfactory. When it works, it's GREAT. Very clear signal. Nicely built, SEEMS solid. But watch out. Pocket radios are SUPPOSED to be rugged and should be long-lasting. This one has been anything but for me.

I needed a small radio to replace the one I had for over 20 years for use while I shower. I bought a shower radio that had a blue hook and it was a piece of junk, getting only one AM station. This Sony radio is FANTASTIC and has many AM stations and the audio is LOUD and clear. I highly recommend it, especially at under 15 dollars. It would make a great gift also.

I love this thing; I bought a second one for backup. I was looking for a portable radio with good reception and volume. I'd prefer a digital tuner, but I have yet to find one on a portable radio that allows you to fine-tune the frequency/amplitude enough to guarantee good reception. I can't comment on the battery life because I haven't had to replace the batteries yet. The speaker volume and quality are good, and the headset jack is nice to have. One thing to note about the headset jack is that it's monaural, so sound will only come out of one speaker. I suppose it'd be nice if the sound were duplicated to both speakers, but it didn't really bother me. The antenna is decently long and sturdy. I'm happy.

Such an excellent idea and it was on sale so I figured why not try it out? I like to play with unusual electronics especially if they have something to do with radio! As expected the software is rather good-looking but not very reliable. I'm still experimenting with the device itself so the software doesn't really matter to me.



After I got the Dingotel I ran out and bought a pair of Motorola GMRS handsets with charging stations to work with this--unfortunately some radios do not charge in their base stations when they're powered on so you'll need to find one that does or your batteries wear out. The cheaper Motorola FRS-only radios don't appear to charge while operating, so use a battery eliminator device that goes into the battery compartment instead. None of the ones I have operate without batteries in the radio while resting in the charging station so you still need batteries or a battery eliminator contraption. You can try to find a base station that accepts single-pin Motorola headsets--good luck trying to find one.



Interestingly enough, both Microsoft Voice Synthesizer and Microsoft Voice Recognition are required for the software to function because you have to have some way to control the device from your walkie-talkie. I successfully got that feature working but as with most voice recognition software it is hard to convince the computer what you want to do. The MS Voice Recognition isn't the command-taking kind but the dictation kind, so I think command-taking voice recognition like you find on telephone customer service numbers would have worked better--maybe Windows Vista supports that kind of voice recognition.



Pros:

This product is an exceptionally interesting application of VoIP technology!

Device is super tiny and slick, requires just a USB port and comes with a USB extender cable. It's just really cool.

Voice recognition and synthesis!! (see Cons).

Neat orange-colored light.

The audio is completely self-contained inside the device as miniature digital sound card!! This means no clipping or other problems you need a sound technical geek to help you fix.

The idea has lots of promise (see Cons).



Cons:

This system requires the base station radio to have a single-pin Motorola-style headset jack. I should have been able to find adapters that convert the Motorola-style single-pin headset jack to the more common Cobra-style two-pin jacks but I've never found any.

Well the concept is great. Linking distant radio repeaters together via the internet. I think this would be a great assett for Search Rescue and disaster relief work. As long as you have infastructure. HOWEVER you need to be somewhat techie--I was NOT able to make it work -stright from the box--.

No support. All emails to support unanswered. Is dingotel even in business anymore? Their digital certificates authenticating dingotel via SSL seem to have all expired. I prepaid some money for the +dail option to terminate calls to landlines, but the dialer does not work. Not pleased at all, and out of patience with the product. I would like my money back

The ASUS Air delivers a good set of features at a remarkably low price--the Amazon $89 price is the lowest one can find. Some vendors ask nearly double this price.

The English instructions are mostly clear. I ran into a problem at the enter-the-WEP stage. After entering the WEP security code when I pressed ENTER, instead of visually accepting it, the screen kept moving me back a step. I had to call ASUS to get help on this. I was promptly connected to a tech specialist who spent as much time as needed to figure this out. Outstanding service compared with other tech call experiences. Be prepared for dialing an (812) area code--it is not a toll free number.

The Air radio's sound is pleasantly balanced and good enough for casual listening.

The remote control is excellent, compared with the Grace and Sangean mini remotes--and it uses AAA batteries instead of buttons.



I also own the Sangean stereo (very nice sound) and Grace internet radio (comparable to the ASUS.) I have given a few of these ASUS radios as gifts and getting grateful and enthusiastic thanks......

Summary on the ASUS Air WiFi radio: Good enough is fine.

Got this item for XMas and it is DOA. I can't return it because I have exceeded the return period. Unfortunately I am not able to get help via either phone or email support (multiple phone calls and support requests). I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the product and complete lack of service thus far. If anyone from Asus would like to help me through this process I might reconsider, but for now consider this to be an extremely upset customer.

This radio offers you very good sound quality, excellent finish, and an easy access to loads of pre-set radio stations with the ability to save up to 250 favourite stations.

Out of the box set-up is straight forward once you manage to navigate through the alphabet to enter your wireless network WPA access key using the volume knob.

The radio has up to 8-sec buffer capacity which meant an almost uninterrupted listening experience for the majority of the stations.

I gave this radio only 3 stars because of the following:

1. The inability to integrate with Reciva Radio restricts you from using the extended search and management of your own station list over the web;

2. Adding a new station is not an easy task which requires manual entry of the station url using the volume knob; and

3. Inability to access PC Media files.

Overall a very good radio that would probably benefit from a firmware upgrade to include additional features.

I have a Verizon Actiontec wireless router for my high speed network that works for all of my laptops, printer, etc. This radio COULD NOT connect wirelessly. I contacted the manufacturer to attempt to rectify the problem, and they were no help whatsoever. Borderline rude as a matter of fact. I did hardwire it and it worked, but I found the station availability to be extremely lacking without Reciva access. And I've read that adding stations is "quite the chore" on this set.

The good news is I was able to return it (out the shipping cost, however)

and I received full credit.

Look elsewhere, IMO...
