The radio pictured for this listing is a Sangean WFR-1 internet radio - but the description is of a lesser-quality Sangean WFR-20. You really can't be sure of what you'll get since the listing is titled "WiFi Internet Radio".... Someone from Amazon should clear up the confusion here... I wouldn't buy until this is clarified...

Addendum - I called Amazon and they said they would correct the listing ASAP. I'd still be wary...

Addendum #2 - Amazon has indeed changed the image to the correct one for this item.

 "Good Enough Is Fine" 2009-11-04
By Charles Yulish (Washington, DC)
The ASUS Air delivers a good set of features at a remarkably low price--the Amazon $89 price is the lowest one can find. Some vendors ask nearly double this price.

The English instructions are mostly clear. I ran into a problem at the enter-the-WEP stage. After entering the WEP security code when I pressed ENTER, instead of visually accepting it, the screen kept moving me back a step. I had to call ASUS to get help on this. I was promptly connected to a tech specialist who spent as much time as needed to figure this out. Outstanding service compared with other tech call experiences. Be prepared for dialing an (812) area code--it is not a toll free number.

The Air radio's sound is pleasantly balanced and good enough for casual listening.

The remote control is excellent, compared with the Grace and Sangean mini remotes--and it uses AAA batteries instead of buttons.

I also own the Sangean stereo (very nice sound) and Grace internet radio (comparable to the ASUS.) I have given a few of these ASUS radios as gifts and getting grateful and enthusiastic thanks......

Summary on the ASUS Air WiFi radio: Good enough is fine.

"DOA and can't get support" 2009-02-11

Got this item for XMas and it is DOA. I can't return it because I have exceeded the return period. Unfortunately I am not able to get help via either phone or email support (multiple phone calls and support requests). I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the product and complete lack of service thus far. If anyone from Asus would like to help me through this process I might reconsider, but for now consider this to be an extremely upset customer.

 "Good Quality Radio " 2008-10-11
By Omar (Perth, Australia)
This radio offers you very good sound quality, excellent finish, and an easy access to loads of pre-set radio stations with the ability to save up to 250 favourite stations.

Out of the box set-up is straight forward once you manage to navigate through the alphabet to enter your wireless network WPA access key using the volume knob.

The radio has up to 8-sec buffer capacity which meant an almost uninterrupted listening experience for the majority of the stations.

I gave this radio only 3 stars because of the following:

1. The inability to integrate with Reciva Radio restricts you from using the extended search and management of your own station list over the web;

2. Adding a new station is not an easy task which requires manual entry of the station url using the volume knob; and

3. Inability to access PC Media files.

Overall a very good radio that would probably benefit from a firmware upgrade to include additional features.

"Didn't work out of the box" 2008-09-04
By Allen Birchland (Riverview, FL)
I have a Verizon Actiontec wireless router for my high speed network that works for all of my laptops, printer, etc. This radio COULD NOT connect wirelessly. I contacted the manufacturer to attempt to rectify the problem, and they were no help whatsoever. Borderline rude as a matter of fact. I did hardwire it and it worked, but I found the station availability to be extremely lacking without Reciva access. And I've read that adding stations is "quite the chore" on this set.

The good news is I was able to return it (out the shipping cost, however)

and I received full credit.

Look elsewhere, IMO...

 "Phoenix Com-One WiFi Radio--Lack of Support" 2009-09-18
By L. A. Loman (St. Louis, MO)
I am very experienced with networks, including wireless devices, and when I purchased a Phoenix Wifi Radio a few months ago, I had no problems getting it working and setting up my favorite stations and podcasts. It worked well in a rural river valley location where I have DSL but rather poor FM reception. Some negatives: Audio volume has limits and if you are a little hard of hearing you might find that you need to stay near the radio to hear things, even at maximum volume; the unit I have simply locks up occasionally and the only way to get it working again is to unplug the adapter and open the battery compartment (or do a mechanical reset); there is no limitation on the time of the alarm like most clock radios--usually one hour--and the com-one will run forever until you turn it off mechanically. I was willing to put up with this because the radio worked very well otherwise and was portable but then I ran into a problem in connecting to router at the rural location. I think this problem could be solved fairly quickly with the help of tech support person but my experience is that PHOENIX COM-ONE TECH SUPPORT IS NONEXISTENT. Do not buy this radio if you feel you might ever need help in setting it up or dealing with glitches and technical problems. I have received no response to messages left on their website and the tech support numbers in my manual has been disconnected. It is too late to send the radio back to Amazon but I think a label should be placed on each box that says: You are completely on your own. Enjoy! Phoenix Wifi Radio - White

"buyer beware! radio has less functionality than listed!" 2009-08-14
By N. Black (cambridge, ma United States)
i would but this as a DO NOT BUY but its not bad out of the box. the main problem for me was that the omly way to change or add stations to the presets was to register on the website. that is fine but it appear the company has gone out of business and you can no longer get your device registered. so therefore you can not add any stations. this was a deal breaker for me.

but in the few days i did have it i explored what else it had to offer. the best feature is the amount of preset channels by region it had. you could select any US city and it would give you 5+ streams fromt that area. it also listed international stations and a hand full from each country. also had streams of audio books and ambient nature sounds and the like.

but besides the lack of website support the radio was not much of an alarm clock. some things like bog snooze button were missing and the display wasnt the clearest. also the batteries on mine died after a day and the wall plug didnt charge nor power the radio. i assume mine was just a rogue defect or maybe the chargeable batteries had gone because it worked with other batteries in it.

so i would not recommend buy this and especially not at this price. knowing what i do now after owning one for a few days, i would say this is worth closer to $20

This radio is configured from an associated web site. Ever since web site maintenance in mid-April, the web site has not worked correctly. My preferences were lost. Some stations, such as BBC World Service, will not play. They do not reply to requests for customer support. I would definitely not recommend this radio.

"Do NOT buy this radio!" 2009-04-25
By Mark F. Heil (West Haven, CT United States)
I liked the idea of this radio but I am horribly disappointed. I was initially able to set up streams and presets to listen to but I have had many problems since. The web interface is very poorly designed script and is just doesn't make alot of sense. Worse, you are held hostage to the website, if their database is down, you can't listen to any of your stations on the radio. If the company goes out of business it looks like the radio will be rendered nonfunctional. They supposedly did a database migration on April 18, 2009, had some problems and they have not fixed it yet, one week later.

By carter hernandez (inglewood, ca United States)
I Bought This Toy At Ross For 68 Cents, Along With A Rare Happining Hair Barbie, And It Was Okay, I Didn't Hate It, Infact, There Was Not Much To Hate, Or Dislike. This All In One Is A Pen That Features An Fm Raido With An Earbud At The Top, And A Paper Shreader. All Great Stuff, But Not Good Because The Little Time Of Day Children Have At School To Learn, They Use This To Melt There Pre- Heated Cheese. In The Packaging, An Ink Refill Which Is Amazingly Tiny Is Included, Also THE ONLY PAPER THAT WILL EASILY (EASILY=DECENTLY)FIT IN THE PAPER SHREADER,which is not that big (smaller than an unfolded gum wrapper) is included. The Radio Is Pretty Cheap, The Pen Has To Be Facing A Certain Direction In A Certain Angle (It Will NEVER Be At An Angle In Which You Can Write And Listen) And Must Be Held That Way Without The Slightest Movement, Just To Once Again Realize That Yoko Ono Is Not Your Favorite Artist And That FM Stinks Packaging Quote " Listen To Your Fave Songs By The Hottest Artist This Summer" Unquote Well Which Summer Is It, There Has Been At Least 6 Since This Was Released, And Unless This Included A Magical Device Which Allows It To Constantly Update Itself In Entertainment Purposes, The Raido Stinks Too. The Shreader Could Of Been Better, On Account Of It Is SO TINY it Only Fits The Paper Included, And It Always Gets Shreads Caught In It That You Cannot Get Out And Tend To Cause Problems When Shreading Paper. The Pen Does Not Write Very Well And If You Forget To Twist It Back Then It Will Never Work Since It Dries Out So Fast. The Unig Itself In Not That Easy To Hold And Writing With It Will Cause Blisters. Overall It Is Not That Great, But If You Get It For 68 Cents Like I Did, You Will Get What You Paid For. 68 Cents Is Not Alot For Those Who Don't Get It. It Is Overpriced Here, Go Buy It At Ross.  "This is a great Internet Radio that coordinates with the Reciva website." 2009-10-19
By Anthony C. Darienzo (Huntington, NY)
I original panned this radio in my first review because the radio could not receive WQXR 105.9 in New York City. I contacted Grace and they said that they could not obtain the url for the music stream from WQXR's website.

After doing a little research on the net I found out how to obtain the url for any streamed music ( a very simple process ) on the Internet. After programming this url on Reciva's website, which then electronically sent it to my radio, I can now receive WQXR's webstream on my Grace radio. By the way, by using the Reciva website you can program any number of stations onto your radio. All and all an excellent product.

 "Excellent sounding Internet Radio" 2009-07-31
By Gregory Fadul (San diego,ca)
Grace Digital has a complete line of award winning internet radios. The Bravado (GDI-IRD4400m) is the flagship model. It has two built in 3 inch top loaded speakers with a rear firing port and wood cabinet (very rare in radios these days) to create a warm sound. The radio has a built in Class D 16 watt digital amplifier ( the first internet radio to actually have a digital amplifier that I know of) to provide crystal clear highs and deep lows.

As with all Grace radio's (except the GDI-IRP600) the Bravado can access over 20,000 radio stations, Pandora, Live365 , Blogtalkradio and Sirius (if you have a Sirius Premium Internet radio subscription). The built in 4 line backlit display provides great view of the stations for you to search by genre or location and add the station to your 5 presets on the front of the unit, 10 presets on the remote or `my favorites' folder. If you prefer to use your computer to search for stations you can register your radio on the new Grace web site [...] . After it is registered you can search and save your favorites on your computer and your favorites will be saved directly on your radio.

The internet radio has a headset jack that can be connected to headsets for private listening or directly to a stereo to listen to any internet radio station directly through your home audio system.

There are less expense radios such as the GDI-IR1000 or 2000 but you would be hard pressed to find a better sounding unit for anything close to the price. Even Cnet which I believe to be the most unbiased and one of the top review sites on the web gave it a `very good' rating [...]

 "Nonexistent AM reception" 2009-09-28
By GarryW (Alameda, California USA)
Word on the street is that this unit and its predecessor (RadioShark "1", I guess) are essentially identical in terms of hardware, and that if you had problems with the old model, you'll have problems with this one too.

That said -

I bought a RadioShark "1" off of eBay for the purpose of recording AM sports broadcasts. However, as others have noted, the AM reception is essentially nonexistent, for both the "1" and the "2". The device might work if the radio station's commercial antenna were poking in your window and zapping this thing directly with a few thousand watts, maybe making it glow a bit. But not otherwise. I live next to a major city. I could partially pick up 1 station. I threw the thing away (without bothering to test the FM.)

"been needing one of these for years!!" 2009-09-25
By of boxers and mutts (new orleans)
i live in new orleans, home of the famous WWOZ 90.7, and its on that station that ive heard some of the best music in my life. so needless to say im loving it. so for installation, i had to do it twice, but im terrible with manuels, reason i gave it a 5 is cause i was able to get it installed in less than 15 minutes. i love it, i can rewind and record, the music ive recorded so far was very easy to get in my windows player, very very cool. as far as reception goes,, yes it could have a better antenna, but as others mentioned, this thing wasnt described as a high power radio,, so if you need more reception, get yourself a fm indoor antenna,

the only bad thing i can say about it, and i knew it before i bought it, is you have to have your computer on to use it, i would love to have a portable player that records and you can transfer the music to you computer later(any suggestions?), until i find something to those specs this will have to do.

if you want to hear great music, check out wwoz in new orleans on saturday mornings!! they have a website and are heard all over the world, cause they rule. wwoz, new orleans saturday mornings from 7am till noon, and check out their schedule during the rest of the week, you will not be sorry.

 "Radio Shark" 2009-09-14

 "The Shark 2 beastie" 2009-09-09
By P. Robinson (AU)
I finally managed to enable it's features but it took a lot of work.

The FM reception from the Shark works well where I live (Christchurch New Zealand). I haven't tried all the available FM stations but have tuned in ten of the twenty or so FM stations we have here. The AM is bad. All the frequencies I tried sounded horrible. Reminded me of MW searches when I was a kid. Crackles only with occasional voices and music drifting in then disappearing.

The radioShark software is crazy. It recognises the hardware but won't provide sound to the computer. So I can tune stations (and hear the tuned station by plugging headphones into the 3.5 which I thought was for external aerial?) but nothing to the computer via the USB. Very odd.

So I decided to install the supplied Snaptune One. Supposedly it was supplied on the install CD along with iFill for Mac/Windows and Proxi for Mac. I opened up the extras folder on the CD looking for Snaptune but no, no extra software, just the radioShark manual in pdf.

Strangely the manual mentioned the wonders of Snaptune. I think if Griffin can remove software from an install CD then surely they could update the manual, not to mention the packaging.

I then visited Griffin support. After a quick search for `Snaptune' the response

was:

"Unfortunately, our friends at Snaptune have had to call it quits. Because the Snaptune One application for radio SHARK 2 depended upon Snaptune's server, the application will no longer function. While we are as disappointed as anyone by Snaptune's demise, Griffin included this application as a freebie with no warranty." - Oh well - I've purchased a lemon.

I then did a search for any software that might enable the features of this thing and Snaptune kept being referenced. So I downloaded and installed and the Shark suddenly sprang to life.

Lovely sound through my PC speakers, time-shifting, scheduling, leave it running for a few hours and it even starts differentiating songs from dialog and ads. Nice touch.

Quite a ride.

So, my experience:

Hardware - 50% okay, FM is loud and clear, AM is really bad.

Supplied software - can't get it to fully work. It recognises the hardware but doesn't send sound to my PC.

Manual - inaccurate and outdated with its reference to software that isn't available.

Packaging - also inaccurate because it references the same software.

On-line support - also inaccurate "Snaptune One won't work because the SHARK 2 is dependent upon Snaptune's server, so the application will no longer function."

Well Snaptune does work and works very well.

I guess I'm happy(ish) with the Shark 2 because it's now doing the job I purchased it for. I just can't see the logic of my having to come up with a tailor-made solution to get it to run properly.

If you do purchase it, download Snaptune One.
