"This is the greatest new toy" 2009-08-07
By Vinylboy (Sarasota, Florida)
Before purchasing my Sangean I read all the customer reviews and was optimistic that I could handle the problems others had experienced.

I am pleasantly stunned and happy to report that it was incredibly easy to install and operate. Of course you need an amplifier too. I turned it on and the menu directed me through selecting the desired wifi signal. It then presented me with more worldwide internet radio selections than I could ever listen to. I like the ability to sort by country and genre. Also there is a companion website that is so simple to use - allows you to add stations of your choice that immediately show up on the receiver display. It is exactly what I was looking for. True the FM antenna is inadequate in weak signal areas and there is no way to attach an upgraded antenna (would be a nice enhancement later) but I was able to set up all the FM stations via their internet radio counterpart. Love this tuner!

"A fairly good component music player" 2009-01-30
By Joe Charmella (Prairie Village, KS)
The radio tuner is fairly good. The only real complaint that I have about it is that the music player does not have a shuffle function. This is incredibly annoying and I am hoping that one shows up in a future firmware update. I have this and the Sangean WR-20 network player. The WR-20 has a shuffle function, however, it tends to cut off songs at the end. Generally speaking, the WFT-1 has better sound quality without the problems of the WR-20. I listen to my library much more than internet radio, but I can say that the radio functionality does work. Did I mention, there is no shuffle function.....

One more thing, I have a WPA2 network with AES encription and this radio handled it with no problem. WiFi setup was easy..

 "Exceptional Tuner" 2009-01-15

Sangean WFT-1 Internet Radio Component Tuner

The tuner arrived ahead of schedule and was in perfect condition. I followed the instructions in the manual carefully and connected within a few minutes to my LinkSys N router. The manual should be edited to ensure that there are no grammatical and spelling errors. Some of the English tends to lack clarity, but most of the instructions can be figured out without much difficulty. The only part I found confusing was entering the KEY for my router. This part of the manual could be much clearer. I was successful just using some intuition, but a few words added to the symbols would have helped greately. For example, there is no suggestion that there are letters that can be selected as well as the numbers in the display when entering the KEY. The selection of stations is amazing; the Frontier Silicon Web site works well to add favorite stations. I just can't say engough about the quality of the sound the WFT-1 brings to my stereo system.

I would like the chance to rewrite the manual. I believe that Sangean would get more 5-star reviews if the manual were clearer in several places. There should be no step in the installation process where one must guess or try to interpret what to do.

"Fits my need, but not perfect" 2009-01-10
By O. Pemberton (Studio City, CA)
Like others have said, User Interface is clunky and the manual is skimpy. However if like me you're just interested in listening to a few stations (in my case, I'm in LA and I wanted to get BBC stations), it's perfect once you've setup the presets. Without reading the manual, and with a wired internet connection, I was able to get my stations within 10 minutes of opening the box. Searching for additional stations not listed in their list is not elegant through the UI, but found what I wanted (stations in Melbourne, Australia, and independent stations in the UK). My only gripe with the internet radio part, is that with so many stations out there, it amazes me it only has 10 presets. With the same keys on the remote, they could have made it 99.

This unit can do lots of other things beside internet radio: playing music files from network drives, playing podcasts and FM radio.

Playing music from network drives and playing podcasts worked fine, although it's clunky with such a limited display and I will never use it for this.

The FM radio seems to be a total afterthought - Sangean FM radios are usually pretty decent, but they've stuck a telescopic FM antenna on the back, and no chance of easily plugging in a decent external antenna which limits its quality.

"A Few Quirks But It Works Reliably" 2009-01-06
By Dr. R. Lookatch (Bloomington, IN)
This is my first of 4 wifi radios and clearly the best; others were returned. It is a bit quirky but I find that pulling the power chord for a second to reset the unit resolves an infrequent overload of some kind. Otherwise it is by far more reliable that the others I tried (Pico, Com One) and rarely buffers or hangs up. The network is also very reliable and enables instant addition of stations by the user.
