 "Save your money" 2009-10-23
By trh (FL)
My wife bought me a G2 for Christmas last year. I waiting for my fifth radio from Slacker right now. The previous four all had problems that Tech Support stated required replacement. Three had memory issues; the fourth wouldn't even turn on when I received it new from the factory.

I love the concept and the music selection was very good. But in the last nine months, I've been without my G2 more than I've had one. I told Tech Support that I didn't want a replacement; I wanted my money back. They said they would pass that request up to management. That was three weeks ago and I haven't heard anything.

As others have said, it is a 'buggy' device. I wouldn't buy one until they fix all the issues they have (like you can only sync via Wifi -- forget trying to get the USB connector to work. Amazing that we have 5-6 iPods in our house and they all sync via USB w/o any problems. You wouldn't think that would be difficult).

 "Slacker G2 Rocks!!!" 2009-10-13
By JJ (Issaquah, WA USA)
This thing is incredible. Why haven't I heard of this before? With some more marketing and some more fine tuning of the device, Slacker G2 will obliterate iPod and satellite radio. Like everyone else, I have a couple of iPods, and I also have XM satellite radio subscription for work. I stoppped listening to my iPod because I get bored with the same old music. The satellite radio is better, but the cost of the monthly subscription adds up, and you can't skip songs or customize the stations to your liking. I love Slacker, and IMHO, there's nothing to not like about it. The whole world should know about it. That said, there are a few minor pet peeves about G2. 1. The battery life is too short 2. Takes a bit too long for the device to turn on. 3. When performing basic functions, such as changing stations, increasing volume etc. it's a bit sluggish and not as fast as it should be. 4. The sound quality could be a bit better, but it's perfectly fine for casual listening. If you are fanatic audiophile insisting on the best sound, G2 may not deliver. I'm a casual listener and I am perfectly happy with it. By the way, I love the sleek box of the G2, and the device is super cute and nice, too. Overall, very very nice.

"GIANT pain, such a disappointment and I really wanted to like it!" 2009-09-24
By Jessie Ott (Wyoming, USA)
This is the most frustrating music player I have ever owned, and I've gone through a lot of them. I have had it for a week, and have yet to have my stations loaded correctly (or all of them, so far I've only got 12 of 39) and I have honestly been trying for a couple hours every day since I got it. I've already had to factory reset it twice and start all over. The updating via USB cable does NOT work for me at all, and from the sounds of it doesn't for a lot of others, either. check out slacker.com/forum before buying if you are considering buying.

It's a great concept, there's just too many bugs still in it, and slacker tech support has NOT been helpful at all. I love the idea of having new music whenever you connect and update, but it's just a big headache to get to that point. I don't have wifi at my house, so I have to go borrow one and sit for a few hours to get anything updated, and only about 1/4 of it updates correctly anyways.

The 3 GB for personal music let me add a little less than 400 songs, which doesn't seem right to me so maybe that was an error on my end, but for 3 GB i was expecting more.

The design is beautiful, but the screen and back are very stracth prone.

I love how it learns your music preference the more you use the heart/ban buttons, although I wish you could just use the heart without neccesarily saving it, sometimes I like a song but don't want to save it.

The headphones are crap and hurt your ears, go ahead and buy good earbuds if you're going to invest the money into this thing.

Granted I've only had it for a week, but it has seriously wasted HOURS AND HOURS of my time trying to get it to work right, and frankly for the money I expect something to work the way it claims. Had I known about all the problems, I would have never bought this, although like I said I love the idea of it. I suggest you check out the forum of other G2 owners before buying this, it seems many people have troubles too. And it's too bad because I really wanted to love this thing.

 "It's a Virtual Jukebox" 2009-09-04
By J. Hicks (Owensboro, KY)
I have been eyeing the Slacker G2 for a while now, and when it went on clearance at the local Best Buy store, I went ahead and purchased one, and I am so glad that I did!

The small size of the unit is perfect and the screen is more than adequate for the album art. I do wish that it would get brighter than the brightest setting, as it is hard to see in sunlight.

The controls are straightforward and the user interface is simple to use. However, I find the system to be a bit laggy. It takes longer than expected to power on, and there is a definite lag in the volume settings.

In spite of these minor annoyances, I find the Slacker G2 to be a wonderfully designed gadget. For someone who doesn't have the time and/or inclination to make multiple playlists, this is a great device. Also ideal for someone who doesn't have a large music collection, and great for people who are getting tired of their music. Users can create 'stations' that are tailored to their musical preferences without actually paying for any music, since it is not yours to keep. Using the Slacker website, users can request up to 25 songs by clicking the heart icon next to a song, but there is a workaround to requesting more! Just manually type in any song and you can request as many as you would like, for any station. It can be a bit of a hassle, but as it is free, this can't be beat. For a nominal fee, users can request unlimited songs by clicking the heart icon.

Sound quality is slightly below CD quality in my opinion. For the typical user, just pair it with a set of NICE headphones and you are well on your way. The included buds are not worth the material they're made of. Works well in my Jeep with the line in feature. There is an equalizer feature, but not customizable.

All in all, a very well thought out and innovative product. Worth the money!

"Great service but buggy hardware." 2009-08-15
By Average Guy
I've had the Slacker G2 now for about 4 months. I bought it after using the slacker service via streaming over the web and loving their stations. Slacker has some great music on their stations and it saves me tons of time because now I don't have to upload songs to a device manually, create playlists or search for music I want. The G2 player is a whole other story. The first player I had would have problems loading stations from day one. Some stations would download, but others would say they needed to be "refreshed" even though it downloaded all the stations successfully it seemed. I looked on the forums and several people were having this problem. I contacted tech support, any they stated they were looking into it. Reset the unit took care of it but it was only a temporary fix as the problem came back in a few days. By the way, tech support is only done via online chat, email, or forum posts. No problem for me since I work in the IT field but novice users may find that an issue. After a couple weeks of ownership, the unit would no longer boot up. It was "looping". It would turn on, the screen would go white, and then the unit would turn off. Tech support tried having me reset it and charge it, but it made no difference. They were going to process an RMA but since I was still in the return period, I just exchanged it. Now I'm on to the second one. It had been working fine for the first month or two, but lately started having some minor problems again. First was, I was at the gym, the battery indicator showed about half strength, but it only played two songs and wouldn't turn on again. I took it home and charged it and its been working for about a week or so until today. I noticed today that I could not update the stations. Every time I tried, it would just reboot. I factory reset the device and as I write this, it seems to be working. Overall, its a great form factor, and when its working properly its a great thing to have. The UI (User Interface like menus) is a little sluggish, but the graphics and capabilities are great. I'm not sure if I would buy this product again as it seems to have some issues that are annoying, but at the same time, because their stations and service is so good, its very nice to have.
