This is the first WiFi internet radio I have owned and I can't compare it to any others on the market. Suffice it to say it has met my expectations for sound, looks and ease of use. From other reviews, I thought the base sound may be may be too strong, but I found that the base and treble sounds may be adjusted for the type of program you are listening to, including, rock, classic, pop, with a simple menu selection. This is also true for the FM mode of operation, which also operates in stereo. I also like the sleek and glossy simulated wood cabinet and black cloth speaker covering, and easy to use remote control with 10 channel presets for both internet and FM radio.
The WiFi radio set up easily after detecting my wireless router. After I entered the password it was off an running with the latest firmware onboard. On the Frontier WiFi radio portal site, I was able to select favorite stations and podcasts from all around the world. Then from the "My Favourites" menu selection on the radio, I am able to "tune-in" those stations for listening without the computer. The Sangean WFR-1 has expanded my radio listening experience.Sangean WFR-1 WIFI Internet Radio

I selected this for a friend based on the following: table-sized, alarm clock, Internet/WiFi, FM and external audio in for CD (since none of these units come with them). In the "running" were this unit, the Sangean WFR-20, two Grace "mono" units, the Logitech Squeezebox Boom, and several others (I do use a Logitech Squeezebox Duet which I love, but this was a for a stand-alone unit).
Pros:
* Great sound from a table-top
* Equalizer/tone control with presets
* Reasonable FM reception in a semi-fringe area
Cons:
* Panel labels for buttons are in a tiny font and in dark-gray - hardly what a bleary-eyed user needs in the morning to set the "snooze alarm"
* Irritating 0.05 MHz increments for FM tuning (could easily program in 0.2 MHz indexing for US)
* Still unable to figure out how to "set" and "unset" "Presets"
* Cludgey Frontier Silicon Internet Radio Portal
* - No method to order Favorites and User Selections other than by order of entry (or so I assume by trial-and-error)
* - Evidently cannot add User Selections to Favorites to ease selection
* - Cannot edit Favorite selections to optimize download speed(these can be the same as User Selections, but download speeds are different - 24 vs 32 vs 128 kbs)
* - Software does not automatically determine appropriate codec for a given file format (i.e. - must select MP3 for .pls playlists)
* - Software does not play what one would assume is appropriate format (i.e. - .m3u does not play for MP3)
* - Software does not convert from other services ([...]) (in US can get NOAA weather radio that way).
* - Limited US selections - clearly "euro-centric" (not a bad thing in itself)
Summary -
Great sound when you find the appropriate source. Software usability needs to be dramatically improved.

I've had it for three days so far. The controls are easier to use than I thought they would be and the sound is like a stereo. I have it in my bedroom and so I don't have to have my computer on when listening to internet stations. I'm happy so far.

I've lived with this Sangean wifi radio since it became available and here's what I think:
The sound quality is excellent (for a clock radio if you catch my drift). Very rich, not tinny, good bass response, clear and tweakable. Obviously the stereo separation is nil because the speakers are just inches apart.
Frontier Silicon is the WiFi radio portal for this Sangean model. It's very reliable. It would be nice if they had links to the radio stations on their website though.
The Sangean is of very limited use to me as a so called "media player", because it will only play MP3 files and WMA files. I have nearly 8000 WAV files on my hard drive which this Sangean will not play and only a handful of MP3 files, so for me it's a waste as a media player. This is a big disappointment to me, maybe not for you. I hope they'll update the software someday to accommodate more types of files. Other wifi radios that bill themselves as media players will play WAV files.
The Sangean seems a bit overpriced, since realistically speaking, everything this radio does, your computer can do better and do it for free. All you need is Realplayer (you can even record radio for up to 8 hours with Realplayer) and Windows Media Player(both free)and a decent set of external speakers. I think it's fair to compare the sound quality you will get out of this Sangean with average quality external computer speakers except you can space computer speakers farther apart.
By the way, I assume you love radio so check out [...] for a free wifi radio portal brought to you by none other than Frontier Silicon. All of the stations are there, and in addition there are links to the stations themselves.
In conclusion the best thing about this radio for me is that it frees me from my computer. There are other WiFi radios out there and I can't help but think I should have kept looking for a more versatile less expensive one.

I received this radio for Christmas. It is a nice product..I hope this helps someone..
When I attempted to connect it to my home network, I could NOT get it to work at all when attempting to set it for DHCP(auto network config mode)..
With either wireless ot wired connection..
It DOES work however, with no issues, when I set it to use a fixed IP address(manual config mode), in either wired or wireless modes..
I have reported this to Sangean, in both email and phone vmail..I hope they can rectify this with a firmware patch or something..
Other than this, the radio works great though..
Regards,
JFeole
