"Full of bugs, unresponsive interface, subpar overall compared to other Squeezebox players" 2009-10-15
By unclemat (United States)
I love Squeezebox players. Before ordering the radio I had three at home: a Classic, a Boom and the original Slimdevices Squeezebox2. These are remarkable devices with superb sound quality, classy look and no-nonsense interface. Pleasure to use and super reliable.

Not so with the Radio. This is a product rushed to market full of interface bugs and obvious features missing from the older devices (such as navigating long list on the remote via alpha keys or being able to disable the remote if there is more than one device in one room). What's worst the unit frequently stops responding to inputs, even froze completely a couple of time that required disconnecting the power supply to reset it.

Even when it works the interface experience is unsatisfactory. The buttons are placed too close to each other, have rubbery feel to them and unlike on the Boom are not back-lit. What further detracts from the experience is slowly menus and choppy operation of the display, very unlike smooth and instantly reacting interface of Classic or Boom with the VFD display. While the unit retains the nice control knob from the Boom, the overall feel is not there. Also Logitech choose to change how the knob and other buttons (such as +) operate and thus making it behave different than Boom. No a good thing if you have several different devices thorough your home (a major point behind devices like Squeezebox).

Another annoyance is that it requires connect to [...] service. It can be avoided by installing Squeezebox Server (formerly called Squeezecenter) and disabling Internet connection. While the Radio is marketed as a Internet Radio device, it's primarily digital network player, and like any other Squeezebox can be used to play songs from your digital library of MP3, FLAC, and similar files. Users not wishing to depend on an external service to operate their Radio should not be forced to log to it.

On the plus side the sound quality is very good for a mono device of this size, the unit is compact and good looking. Slimdevices/Logitech has shown good support in fixing bugs in their Squeezebox software, so there is a good chance most of the problems will be fixed promptly, however I think it is a shame that a company decides to release a buggy product. I am sending mine back.

 "Better than expected" 2009-10-14
By G-Radio
When the Boom came out, I wanted to purchase it right away, but the $300 price tag and the inability to truely make it wireless detered me. Now that the Radio is out with a lower price tag, battery capability and a color LCD, I was totally sold. I've had the Radio for about a week now, and I simply love it. Even the wife was jamming to it when I got home from work the day after I bought it.

So far I have only had one issue with it...I can not find a setting to set the Album Art size to full screen on the Now Playing screen. It says in the manual that it is under the Screensaver settings, but when I go there it doesn't exist. I sent an email to Logitech support, but have not heard back from them yet.

Another cool feature that I didn't realize existed, was the ability to control the Radio from [...]

As far as sound quality goes, it is far better than expected. There is virtually no distortion even at maximum volume. I even plugged a set of Computer Speakers into the Headphone Jack and it didn't make that much of a difference. The Base levels aren't that deep, but they are there. I can put it in my livingroom and pump it up near max volume and hear it clearly throughout the house.

I haven't tested the Wireless strength extensively yet, but I was able to hook it up in the garage (1 Floor below and 50 feet from the router) and the signal strength was near full.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and can't wait to get the battery pack so I can just carry this thing around anywhere.
